Personalising Your Living Space

There is a personal style that is inherent to everyone that is expressed through fashion, individual preferences and most importantly, by the way they live. A visitor can get an immediate sense of their hosts’ taste and style the moment they enter a residence. The interior design and use of decoration in a space plays a major role in creating the ambience of an environment.

Setting a Unified Theme throughout the Home

It is very important to focus on what your home means to you. The choice of the interior design can provide a relaxing environment or a stimulating environment. You need to do a bit of researching at the start to see what current trends in interior design are and identify your preferences. Your lifestyle can impact how you decorate your home as well. For example, if you are a person who loves to entertain, then you can create larger open spaces which allows for more interaction. If you regard your home as more of a sanctuary or a safe haven, the living spaces will tend to be cozy with comforting elements.

Use of colour and accents

Colour plays a major role in connecting different spaces of a home. The use of warmer colours such as red and yellow will work best in spaces that are used to entertain. And the use of cooler colours such as blue and green can help create a relaxing atmosphere in more private spaces of the house. Neutral colours such as brown and grey also have a role to play. These colours when used in combination with warmer or cooler colours can accentuate the effect of the more dominant colour. Lighting level can also help with defining a space. In places like the dining area, you can go for direct accent lighting to highlight the activity. Diffused lighting can create a comfortable environment in public areas such as the living room or the lobby. To emphasize coziness and privacy, low or dim lighting can be used in bedrooms.

Once the theme and setting of the space is fixed, you can go ahead and use accents to create a spot of highlight in the room. Certain interior decorating elements such as a sculptural element, a unique furniture piece, floor lamp, plant pot or a large photo frame can become an accent that ties in all design aspects of the room. These elements can create a focal point in the space.

Layering of Textures

Designing with intention is a key concept in curating the space to your personality. All surfaces of the home such as the floor, walls and ceiling need to complement each other. You can layer textures on top of each other by the use of art or hangings on the wall and the use of shaggy rugs, comforting low furniture on the floor. You can enhance certain textures that you like by using certain fabric for furniture, cushion covers and throws.

Decorating your living space is an experiment in progress. There is a learning curve where you have to figure out what you need to express through the selected furnishings. The interior will evolve over time when you start refining your palette.
